Legacy Modernization

How teams use Catalio to capture what a legacy system really does, define the target, find the gaps, and prove the new system still works.

In a modernization engagement, you are replacing or rebuilding a system that nobody fully understands anymore. The people who built it have moved on, the documentation is out of date, and the real rules live in the code. The biggest risk is losing behavior nobody wrote down. Catalio drafts a picture of what the current system does, helps you compare it with where you’re going, and shows which requirements the new system has been verified against.

Capture what the system does today

Start from what you already have. With Extract, Catalio reads your code, documents, and conversations and drafts the application’s specification: its capabilities, processes, features, business rules, use cases, and requirements.

  • Code: connect the legacy system’s repositories so Catalio can surface its components and map them to the application.
  • Documents: upload old specs and process guides with Document Extraction.
  • People: run Discovery Sessions with the subject matter experts who know how the system behaves in practice.

Nothing is final until someone on your team reviews it. Suggestions arrive as Change Proposals that you accept, change, or dismiss. See Extract overview.

Define the target

Create an initiative that describes where you’re going: the business outcomes you want and what is in and out of scope. The initiative holds the plan, goes through review and approval, and keeps a record of each decision.

Find the gaps

Gap Analysis compares what the current system does with what the target needs to do.

You run Gap Analysis on an initiative when you’re ready. It suggests new requirements, components, or policies for anything not already in your catalog, and those suggestions go to your team for review like everything else.

Migration patterns

The comparison is the same whatever you are moving to: source behavior, target requirements, and every deliberate difference between them.

  • Moving to Salesforce: the Salesforce integration is available today in Beta.
  • Moving to ServiceNow or NetSuite: these connectors are on the roadmap and not available yet. You can still capture the legacy behavior and the target requirements in Catalio and compare them. See ServiceNow and SaaS Platform Configuration.

When the modernization is part of a client engagement, see Consulting & Systems Integration.

Prove it still works

Link test cases to the requirements you captured, and record each run as a test result: Passed, Failed, Skipped, or Blocked. Over time those results show which requirements the new system has been verified against, so you can show stakeholders that the behavior you depended on made it across.
